August Remodeling Ideas to Close Out the Summer

As summer begins to wind down and we transition from August to September, this is an ideal time to tackle small home improvements, maintenance tasks and remodeling projects.

Carefully plan ahead and make a list of the areas your home is most in need of some TLC. Concentrate on projects that you should consider doing pre-fall, while the weather is still warm and your schedule is a little more flexible. Schedule these tasks based on your budget, timeline, weather, and your work and life commitments.

Home remodeling projects to consider starting in August:

  • Windows and doors upgrades or replacements – Temperatures vary between 40F to 80F degrees and are mild enough for caulking to adhere. Investing in new windows and doors will help retain your indoor heat and block cold temperatures, especially with winter right around the corner.

  • Roof repairs or replacement – Inspect your roof to look for loose shingles; take a quick peek through the attic to see if there are any noticeable leaks. Whether you just need a few spots repaired, or to install an improved roofing system, do it before the fall chill and winter snow set in. Roofing projects are mostly done in spring through early fall because the material needs certain higher temperatures to seal. Investing in a new roof with improved ventilation in the attic provides a “cap” to maintain a steady home temperature, savings in your energy bills, and your comfort.

  • Siding repair or replacement – Take a good look at your exeterior siding. Are there areas that need a quick fix? Or are you due for a new siding installation? Late summer is ideal due to the stability of outside temperatures. Investing in new siding provides your home with added “padding“ to help maintain a comfortable temperature and additional savings in your energy bills.

  • Interior remodeling – Whether you just need a fresh coat of paint or a more elaborate upgrade to your kitchen, bathroom or basement — these are the months to get it done! Family vacations are wrapping up, and you can still keep the windows open to ventilate renovation dust, paint odor, noise, and debris.

  • House addition – These are the ideal months for a house renovation on a grander scale because it’s simple to spend time outside to escape the chaos inside. No kitchen? No problem. Grilling in your backyard solves that issue.

If you are able to hold off on big renovation projects for one more year, at the very least take care of these maintenance tasks before winter sets in.

  • Clean gutters and downspouts

  • Add insulation to attic and walls

  • Check chimney and venting systems

  • Cover any exposed exterior pipes

  • Inspect your furnace, replace filters, and clean registers

  • Inspect your water heater

  • Use caulk, spray foam, or weather stripping around windows and doors

  • Check interior/exterior holes where pipes, vents and electrical conduits run through

Maintaining a home is a year-round job. But getting your home ready for winter should start now rather than later!
